PRESS RELEASE

Establishment of a Circular Materials Consortium with Industry-Academia Collaboration—Promoting Sustainable Materials Development from a Comprehensive and High-Level Perspective

August 25, 2022

GSAIS, Kyoto University
NAGASE & CO., LTD.

The Kyoto University (Kyoto, Kyoto; President: Nagahiro Minato) Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability and NAGASE & CO., LTD. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Kenji Asakura) have established the Circular Materials Consortium as a place for discussion and proposals about the development of circular (sustainable) materials. The consortium begins operations in September 2022. This consortium will be hosted by Kyoto University and will provide opportunities for discussion and providing information on the latest technology and trends related to the development of sustainable materials. As a corporate sponsor, NAGASE will use its wide-ranging industry networks, particularly in the chemicals manufacturing industry, to help promote the consortium, and support following up with participating companies. The development of sustainable materials is complicated due to various factors including recyclability, and being related to multiple fields such as resources and energy, so as interest grows in the circular economy it has become clear that solutions cannot be found within only a single specialty.

By providing a place for discussion and the provision of information on advanced technology and international trends from a comprehensive and high-level perspective, this consortium will aim to contribute to the circular economy through materials development. By participating in this consortium, companies will be able to join lectures and workshops held by leading figures from various industries around the world, as well as building networks between participating companies. Gaining knowledge in a variety of fields, not bound by the specialization of a single company, should encourage the development of sustainable materials. From October 2022 to August 2023, this consortium plans to run programs such as presentations of results and workshops with leading industry figures from businesses and universities in Japan and abroad. The consortium also plans to apply for government projects with industry and academia collaboration. Currently, esa Inc., Toyobo Co., Ltd., NATOCO Co., Ltd., Mitsui Chemicals Inc., Yonex Co., Ltd., and NAGASE plan to join the consortium*.

*As of August 2022. Participating companies will be accepted until the programs begin.
