CUSTOMER INTERVIEW

The Coffee You're Meant to Find Waits for You.

Discovering your perfect match through PostCoffee's Coffee Diagnostic

January 14, 2026

As specialty coffee continues to grow worldwide, PostCoffee, one of the largest online coffee companies in Japan, has built a distinctive experience for discovering your perfect cup — both online and in-store.

Online, their popular "Coffee Diagnostic" uses data to understand each customer's preferences and recommend the ideal beans. Offline, their thoughtfully designed store spaces and curated coffee goods create a sensory experience that goes beyond the cup.

We sat down with CCO Mr. Shimomura to learn more.

Q: To start, can you tell us about the background behind the Coffee Diagnostic and the vision behind it?

The Coffee Diagnostic came from a simple realization: everyone needs an easy way to find the coffee that's right for them. Customers who visit our café often ask, "What do you recommend?" — because putting your own taste preferences into words is genuinely difficult. The Diagnostic was created to solve that problem.

By suggesting beans matched to each person's tastes and lifestyle, we hope even first-time coffee drinkers feel inspired to give it a try. Using diagnostics and data to connect great coffee with the right customer as directly as possible — that's the heart of what the Coffee Diagnostic does, and I believe it's both PostCoffee's mission and our greatest strength.

Q: Great! Can you tell us about the bean lineup recommended through the Coffee Diagnostic?

We partner with roasters around the world and carry more than 50 varieties of specialty coffee at any given time — around 200 varieties over the course of a year. Origins span Ethiopia, Kenya, Guatemala, and beyond, with roast profiles ranging from light to dark. One of our defining features is that alongside Japan's top domestic roasters, we're also able to offer beans from roasters overseas.

Q: What kind of "coffee discoveries" can customers expect?

With the PostCoffee subscription, every delivery brings different beans — so there's always that excited anticipation before you open the package, and the joy of knowing these particular beans were chosen just for you out of so many options.

Looking ahead, we want to become the brand people turn to when they want to find their perfect coffee — not just in Japan, but globally. We're confident that by combining coffee with digital technology and logistics, we can get exceptional coffee into customers' hands faster than ever.

*Subscription and e-commerce orders are available for domestic delivery (within Japan) only.

Q: How do you approach cost optimization in logistics and packaging materials?

Recently, switching to TiMELESS® packaging has allowed us to meaningfully reduce material costs. Since our subscription is built around postal delivery, the slimmer profile of TiMELESS® bags — made possible by the absence of a plastic valve — also helps lower shipping costs.

With coffee bean prices rising, being able to reduce both packaging and shipping costs means we can continue offering high-quality beans to our customers without raising prices. That's a significant advantage for us.

Q: Finally, do you have a message for readers and customers?

Don't let coffee intimidate you! It's perfectly fine to start from a place of "I have no idea what to choose."

We'd love for people to think: "When in doubt, just ask PostCoffee." We want to be there for that first step — and for every step of your coffee journey after that.

We extend our sincere gratitude to PostCoffee's Mr. Shimomura and everyone involved for their time and cooperation.

Thank you.
