On Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3, 2022, Japan Para Athletics (JPA) will hold the WPA Approved NAGASE Cup Para Athletics Competition. This is a new competition which is specially sponsored by NAGASE & CO., LTD. (Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Kenji Asakura).
The largest para athletics competitions in Japan are ‘the Japan Para’ Championships held by JPSA (the Japanese Para-Sports Association, May 14 to May 15 for 2022) and ‘the Nihon Para’ Athletics Championships held by JPA (June 11 to June 12 for 2022). It is planned that in the future the NAGASE Cup will have a similar number of races and categories as both, making it one of the largest para athletics competitions in Japan.
In September 2018, NAGASE & CO., LTD. hired blind marathon and track para athlete Shinya Wada as an employee, while providing support for blind athletics. President Kenji Asakura commented, “It is an honor to be able to sponsor a competition like this in which top-class athletes will compete. Through a long-term sponsorship, we would like to organize races that will inspire children to become athletes in the future.”
With restrictions on athletes traveling overseas during the COVID-19 pandemic, the JPA has been working to build a foundation for holding more WPA approved competitions in Japan, in order to provide athletes with opportunities for official records needed to participate in international events and to improve their world rankings. JPA Chair Akemi Masuda stated, “This will be a new competition held with the cooperation of a private company. I hope to expand efforts like this in order to help train the next generation of athletes.”
Dates: Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3, 2022
Place: Komazawa Olympic Park Stadium, Tokyo
