EDTA-based (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) chelating agents encapsulate metal ions through multidentate coordination, forming highly stable 1:1 complex to sequester them. They are effective against a wide range of divalent and higher-valent metal ions, such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Pb. They act most strongly in neutral to alkaline conditions. Although they exhibit low selectivity, they readily form water-soluble complexes and are used as a general-purpose chelating agent.
Soaps and detergents, cosmetics, cleaning agents, paper and pulp, metal surface treatment, textiles, synthetic resins, and other applications
