Birla Carbon

Carbon Black N330

  • Automotive & Transportation
  • Polymers & Resins
  • Paper & Ink
  • Paints & Coatings
Carbon black is the predominant reinforcing filler used in rubber compounds. Improvement in rubber properties is a function of physical and chemical characteristics including aggregate size and structure, particle size (surface area), surface activity, and porosity. Birla Carbon manufactures a wide range of surface area and structure combinations (ASTM designated N series and differentiated Birla Carbon products) offering tailored morphologies, controlled ash/residue levels, and consistent quality to deliver predictable performance in tire and industrial rubber applications.

Identification

Chemical Name:

Carbon Black

Synonyms:

furnace black, Conductex, Raven P, K Ultra

Functionality

System:

Polymer Masterbatch & Concentrate

Function Description:

  • Carbon black serves primarily as a reinforcing filler in rubber compounds to improve tensile strength, abrasion resistance, modulus and hysteresis control.
  • It also functions as a pigment and conductive/processing additive in plastics, coatings and masterbatches.
  • Performance is tuned via particle size, structure, surface activity and porosity to meet specific compounder requirements.

Applications & Uses:

  • Reinforcing filler for passenger car, commercial and specialty tire treads and carcasses
  • fillers in mechanical rubber goods (hoses, belts, profiles, O-rings, gaskets)
  • masterbatch and compounding for plastics
  • conductive and antistatic grades for electrical applications
  • pigment in inks, coatings and plastics
  • low-PAH grades for regulated applications.

Benefits:

  • Wide range of ASTM N-series grades and differentiated Birla Carbon™ products for tailored reinforcement and processing
  • controlled NSA/STSA and OAN for predictable in-rubber performance
  • pelletized forms for easier handling and improved dispersion
  • options with low PAH for regulatory targets
  • consistent, well-characterized specifications for tire and mechanical rubber goods applications.

Performance Attributes:

  • Provides measurable reinforcement (increased tensile strength and abrasion resistance) via controlled particle size and high specific surface area
  • adjustable aggregate structure for modulation of modulus and compound viscosity
  • porosity control influences effective volume fraction and conductivity
  • pelletized grades improve handling, dispersion and dosing
  • low-PAH options for regulatory compliance.

Properties:

Particle Size: Approximately 8 nm to 100 nm
Aggregate Size: Aggregates formed from primary particles * structure level affects modulus, hardness, conductivity and dispersion (qualitative)
Surface Activity: Organophilic surface with edge functional groups (H, O) affecting elastomer interaction (qualitative)
Porosity: Porosity affects NSA vs STSA and envelope density * higher porosity increases NSA and volume fraction (qualitative)
