Ezaki Glico announced on February 12, 2002 that the world's
first successful development of the new food ingredient 'Cluster
Dextrin' (CCD), a highly branched cyclic dextrin, with the
cooperation of Nippon Maize Products and Nagase ChemteX.
CCD is a branched polymer dextrin with a large ring structure
of about 900 linked dextrose molecules, developed with Ezaki
Glico's fundamental production technology. The new ingredient
is produced by the activity of a micro-organically derived
branching enzyme on amylopectin. Compared to existing dextrin,
the new product is superlative for food processing as it is
easily soluble in cold water, slow to deteriorate, has a uniform
molecular size and low osmotic pressure on absorption.
Ezaki Glico will first formulate the new ingredient into
a new powdered sport supplement brand as 'Power Production',
to be released for commercialization to the market in April
2002. Thereafter Ezaki will also begin using the ingredient
in their other food products.
Ezaki Glico has been conducting research since 1994 with
Nagase ChemteX on efficient production of the branching enzyme,
and with Nippon Maize Products on production of the new ingredient,
resulting in today's applied technology. The new product is
suitable for beverages, baked goods and general food processing
as an energy supplement, quality and flavor enhancer or glazing
agent.
In future Ezaki plans to penetrate the use of the product
into the field for pharmaceuticals.
