In collaboration with Sefa Technology Inc., Nagase has developed a device that automatically attaches barcodes to ampoules and built a system to management of ampoule data

The healthcare division of Nagase & Co. Ltd. has developed and launched a “surgical drug crisis management system” that enables the management of data on drug ampoules used at hospitals and other medical institutions.

The system comprises an automated labeling system, manual labeler, and registration computer system installed in the pre-op room, and a label scanning system installed in the operating theater. With the system, the automated labeling system is used to attach labels to ampoules received within the hospital. The barcode labels are then scanned and the drug data registered in the computer system. Before the ampoule is used to treat the patient in the operating theater, the barcode label is scanned again to reconfirm the drug data registered in the computer system. The system therefore assists in the prevention of medical errors.

Until now, it has been difficult to attach labels to ampoules containing anesthetics and other surgical preparations, as the smallest ampoules are no bigger than a little finger. As a result, many medical institutions rely on manual operations for ampoule data management, with physicians having to visually reconfirm the drug name written on the ampoule a number of times before treating a patient. Ampoules are delivered in lots of 10–15 from pharmaceutical companies, but are then divided into single ampoules for storage within the hospitals. As the ampoules are not labeled with barcodes, in-hospital management relies on manual procedures by nurses, including counting the number of ampoules before and after usage. This can cause various problems, including mismatching inventory numbers and inaccurate patient invoices.

In collaboration with Sefa Technology Inc., Nagase has developed a device that automatically attaches barcodes to ampoules and built a system to support in-hospital management of ampoule data. Using this system, barcode labels can be attached to each individual ampoule, thereby enabling management of individual ampoule drug data on the hospital’s host computer. Medical institutions can therefore manage inventory data, drug data, and drug history in single ampoule units on the computer system. The system also allows easy management of inventory data and can be used in place of the manual procedures used by physicians and nurses to reconfirm drug data prior to administration.

Our healthcare division has developed a track record in the supply of healthcare systems—for such applications as infectious disease control and medical error prevention —to hospitals and other medical institutions across Japan. By linking the new surgical drug crisis management system with our medical error prevention system, physicians can compare ordering and ampoule data, which should contribute to the more accurate prevention of medical errors.

We are targeting use of this system by 10 medical institutions in fiscal 2003 and 30 medical institutions in fiscal 2004.
