Message from the President
Rapid economic development has enabled human beings to enjoy
a higher standard of living, but in the process has degraded
the quality of the earth's environment, the home of every
living creature, and is creating a negative legacy for the
generations to come.
Air and water pollution, global warming, the destruction of
the ozone layer, acid rain, loss of the rain forests, desertification-the
problems facing the global environment are growing more and
more extreme.
In 1992 the United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development, also known as the Earth Summit, was held in Rio
de Janeiro to address these issues. It set an agenda of sustainable
development for all, development that is compatible with a
healthy environment. The environmental problems facing us
were brought into sharp focus, as was the necessity of working
actively on a global scale to solve them.
In a time when no corporation can afford to ignore the environment,
we have made the task of fully addressing environmental issues
an integral part of our corporate philosophy. We set up our
Environment Protection Committee in 1999 to coordinate and
promote environmental activities across the company as a whole.
In particular we are working toward a more harmonious relationship
with the environment by developing environmentally-friendly
businesses and promoting eco-businesses. In 2000 we acquired
ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental
management systems.
These and other efforts to preserve the environment are part
of the company-wide program we call Nagase Eco-Literacy. Although
our efforts could still use improvement, I hope these pages
will provide you with useful information about what Nagase
is doing to contribute to the achievement of an ecologically
sustainable society.
